A Walk Through History
Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.
The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.
Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.
In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

The city is vegan friendly, as well as the people being friendly. All historic sites are within walking distance, there is a sightseeing bus that does a tour with added river cruise as part of the price. Chester is still being excavated due to new architectural findings. The Visitor centre is well located, near to the cathedral, and the staff are very helpful. There are many places to eat, some restaurant chains and many local businesses.

I recommend going to the Orthodox church to celebrate the Greek Easter this year it was brilliant, each year it seems to get better and better. I also recommend staying at the MacDonalds New Blossom hotel which is centrally appointed and easy to get to the church via the No:16 bus the hotel has good facilities and does a variety of full English cooked breakfasts it also has good Wi-Fi in each room and good bathing facilities. At an reasonable price. If you still have time board the tour bus and also go for a river trip as well as an good place for shopping and restaurants.

I was here for a planned weekend singing the services in the Cathedral. I loved the atmosphere of the city, the rows had so much character. The Cathedral was amazing and walking the walls was great. Good shopping and cafes/restaurants. The lady on reception on arrival and the next day was very helpful with recommendations for where to eat and without asking provided me with an extra sheet as the duvet was too hot. The hotel was quiet but I did ensure that my booking did not coincide with a race day or weekend knowing (from experience) that you won't get much sleep.
